George Baldock’s wife was raising the couple’s only daughter back in England. His tragic death came on the same date when his daughter celebrated her birthday.

Baldock was a professional football player who represented clubs across England and Greece. He also played as a right wing-back for the Greek national team.

Before his unfortunate death on October 9, 2024, George played for the Greek professional football team Panathinaikos. He had joined the side on May 29, 2024.

Prior to his stint in Greece, Baldock featured in over 200 games for the English Premier League side, Sheffield United.

He commenced his professional playing career in England with the fourth-tier club, MK Dons. Starting as an academy player, Baldock had a handful of loan spells across multiple English clubs.

What Was George Baldock’s Cause Of Death?

Greek media outlets Sport24 and SDNA initially reported Baldock’s passing on October 9, 2024. The footballer was found dead in the pool of his house in Glyfada, Athens on Wednesday, at the age of 31.

When Police discovered George unconscious in his swimming pool, they tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. However, it didn’t work out for the player as the medical emergency units confirmed his death.

Greek national team released a statement paying tribute to Baldock, who registered 12 international appearances for the national side.

“With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock. There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family,” a statement read!

Likewise, Baldock’s former club, Sheffield United expressed condolences to their popular player via a club statement, writing,

“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and teammates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”

While an investigation is going on, the actual cause of Baldock’s death remains unknown.

George was born George Henry Ivor Baldock on March 9, 1993. He grew up in his hometown of Buckingham, England, as the youngest of three sons.

Baldock’s parents raised him alongside two elder brothers: Sam Baldock and James Baldock. James, the eldest among three brothers, serves as the club doctor at the EFL Championship club, Oxford United.

Sam, age 35, is an English former professional footballer like his younger brother. Sam started his career at MK Dons like George and hung up his playing boots featuring as a striker for Oxford United in 2023.

George’s upbringing was heavily influenced by his supportive parents and siblings. While he sparked interest in playing football by watching his elder brother, Sam, his father was also involved in the sport as a manager of the local team.

On the other hand, Baldock’s mother played the role of the second fiddle, while also assuring the importance of education to her kids. His mom worked as a deputy head teacher at the Royal Latin School in Buckingham.

Baldock was raised with a Greek nationality and white ethnicity. He had Greek ancestry from his maternal grandmother’s side.

George penned a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee with Sheffield. He later extended his contract with the team till 2024. Eventually, Baldock parted from Sheffield in May 2024, after a decorated career with 205 appearances and 6 goals.

Baldock then joined the Greek Super League team, Panathinaikos. He had signed a three-year contract with the side on May 29, 2024.

Baldock was a married man! He shared a daughter with his wife who lived in England despite the deceased player traveling to Greece.

It was Baldock’s wife who first showed concern as soon as she couldn’t make contact with her husband. She reportedly tried to contact him for several hours and didn’t get any response.

She then contacted the villa owner Baldock lived in Glyfada which later led to a police search of the property. Baldock’s dead body was later discovered in his swimming pool.
